A group used several Evaluate steps to determine the nature and mix of their portfolio of projects.  They first characterized and analyzed their current portfolio, along with a report about goals set by their senior management team.  They collected feedback from leaders in their area whose projects are being considered. 

Feedback questions included:

• Balance in the portfolio (-5 to +5, where the scale represented directions for emphasis as opposed to values).  Items on the list included such things as RISK & REWARD, INTERNAL & EXTERNAL resources, SHORT & LONG term efforts.
• Are we working on the right number of things? (vote Yes/No with comments).
• What important strategic level issues should we be working on? (Generate, Organize, Evaluate 1-5).
• How appropriate is the proposed set of selection principles? (Organize to review the principles, Evaluate 1-5 with comments)
